Miami Unveils Bold New Football Uniforms
OXFORD, Ohio - Echoing the Miami University Alma Mater of celebrating its tradition while embracing the future, Miami University Athletics unveiled a bold new look for its football uniforms on Wednesday, July 24 that includes cutting-edge developments in apparel technology from adidas.
"We are excited that adidas has partnered with us to take the Miami brand to a new level, said Miami University Athletics Director David Sayler. Our new uniform uses the latest technology and cutting-edge graphics to give our football program a powerful new look and claim the name Miami. While the design pays tribute to our proud heritage, it is a bold look into our future."
Reflecting a progressive vision that has quickly taken shape in the past few months to aggressively enhance many areas of the department, including facilities, this fresh look helps signal a new era for Miami Athletics.
Miami joins programs such as UCLA and Nebraska as one of just 12 schools nationwide to roll out the adidas TECHFIT uniform with ShockWeb technology and is the only school in adidas apparel to boast the school name on the shoulders of the jersey. Hydrographics Inc. partnered with adidas in the production of the helmets.
Everything we do at adidas is about helping athletes perform better, said adidas Director of Football Mark Daniels. Miamis new adidas TECHFIT uniforms feature adidas ShockWeb technology, designed to keep players fast, cool and mobile. The new design highlights the RedHawks traditional colors and logos in an updated and more aggressive look.
Today we welcome a new change in uniform that is sharp, while still maintaining Love and Honor to all the Miami Football student-athletes of the past, as we Stand As ONE both Redskins and RedHawks, said Miami Football Head Coach Don Treadwell. In todays college football landscape, due to the opportunity of TV exposure, your team uniforms can minimize or maximize your first impression even before the clock starts the official game. Our team cant wait to wear the new adidas uniform and represent Miami Football with our new look.
Not only has adidas developed a dynamic style for Miamis football uniforms, the company has also created an exclusive Miami numbering and lettering font for all sports to use to strengthen the Miami brand with a consistent and distinct look for all teams.
The Miami wordmark is prominently displayed on the shoulders of the football jersey and back of the helmet, expanding beyond the traditional M logo. Weaving the past with the present, a feather design on the helmet and in the numbers celebrates Miamis rich traditions while looking to the future. Accenting the traditional Red and White colors, a chrome coloring is incorporated to highlight elements of the design to produce a vibrant look.
Below are descriptions of the various elements within the uniform, why they were used as part of the design and some of the history behind their significance.
Founded in 1809, Miami University is one of the oldest public institutions in the country. Miami University consistently ranks among the top public universities in the nation, cited often for the quality of our academic programs and undergraduate teaching, for experiences that lead to student success, and as a Best Value among national colleges. Miami combines a liberal arts foundation for all undergraduate majors with the active engagement of students in both curricular and co-curricular life. Forty-one percent of students study overseas; more than 70 percent participate in internships. Graduate students and undergrads participate with faculty in research and scholarship activities. Retention and graduation rates are some of the highest in NCAA Division I schools. One of Miami University's most famous graduates was Benjamin Harrison, who later became a President of the United States. Professor William Holmes McGuffey taught at Miami from 1826 to 1836, the year the first and second Eclectic Readers were published. Additionally, three national fraternities originated at Miami University: Phi Delta Theta, Beta Theta Pi and Sigma Chi. Over the years, Miami has been branded across the country in different ways. Here, we claim the name Miami and highlight it as our name, expanding beyond just the traditional M that leaves open for interpretation who or what it means.
Miami Football is celebrating its 125th season this year. The program is among the nations elite, ranking among NCAA Division I FBS leaders in all-time winning percentage and all-time wins. Throughout its history, Miami has established itself as one of the premiere football programs in the Mid-American Conference, seizing 15 MAC titles and made 11 bowl appearances. Miami also is the alma mater of two-time Super Bowl Champion quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and NCAA record-holding running back Travis Prentice. Miami University is recognized throughout the sports world as The Cradle of Coaches because of the number of coaching legends who began their careers on the Oxford campus. College football luminaries such as Woody Hayes, Bo Schembechler, Ara Parseghian and John Pont used Miami as a training ground, as did professional coaching greats like Weeb Ewbank, Paul Brown and Sid Gillman, most of whom are Miami University graduates. In 2014, Miami Athletics will immortalize another coaching great when it unveils a statue for Super Bowl XLVII Champion Coach and alumnus John Harbaugh.
Feathers in the jersey are symbolic of Miamis past and present, weaving the story of this institutions relationship with the Miami Indian Tribe, who lived in Southwest Ohio. Much like Miami Universitys name derived from the region, the RedHawk nickname also holds significance. The nickname RedHawks is believed to be based upon the red-tailed hawk, which is indigenous to Ohio. The tail of the hawk is a brick-red color, and red brick is a prominent fixture on the Miami University campus. This feature fully embraces and incorporates Miamis nickname identity, pulling the rich tradition of the University and athletics into the future.
Miami used chrome coloring as part of its jerseys at one point, and, recently had it incorporated into the beak of the RedHawk. The chrome incorporated here positions Miami in an edgy, less traditional way, but embraces the bright future of Miami University and Miami University Athletics.
The RedHawks new adidas TECHFIT uniform celebrates Miami with a bold new style. Traditional RedHawks colors and logos are amped up to create a faster and edgier look. The MIAMI wordmark on the shoulders claims the name Miami in brilliant university red highlighted with metallic chrome silver.
adidas gave Miami the custom treatment with original numerals based on the MIAMI wordmark font and an aggressive RedHawk feather print that appears within the numbers and on the helmet. The helmet features an all-over feather print on red metallic chrome, with a metallic chrome silver MIAMI decal across the back and the beveled M on the front. The pants have a large metallic chrome silver beveled M logo.
Additional unique Miami details that will go onto the final version of the uniform like the "LOVE AND HONOR" statement inside the jersey neckband and the state of Ohio patch centered on the upper back strive to create emotional connections for the player and alumni alike. When this team lines up, they will send a clear message that We ARE Miami.
Miamis new uniform marks the introduction of adidas TECHFIT ShockWeb technology, designed to keep players fast, cool and mobile on the field. ShockWeb features engineered body mapping, which maximizes compression zones across the chest and sides, in a lightweight knit structure that provides a tight fit with enhanced range of motion.
Integrated CLIMACOOL mesh zones create airflow to keep players cool in every temperature.
