Miami Defeats Northwood in exhibition game, 76-71
OXFORD, Ohio (WKRC) -- Five RedHawks scored in double figures as the Miami University mens basketball team defeated Northwood on Wednesday evening in exhibition action at Millett Hall, 76-71.
Sophomore guard Willie Moore led all players with 16 points, sinking 6-of-8 field goals, including three from 3-point range. Freshman guard Jaryd Eustace chipped in 14 points, while senior forward/center Blake McLimans added 13, senior forward Will Felder tallied 12 and sophomore guard Reggie Johnson added 10 points in the winning effort.
Felder also amassed four of the RedHawks seven blocked shots, while freshman forward Joshua Oswald added five assists and a team-high eight rebounds.
Early triples by Felder and McLimans helped lift Miami to a quick 8-5 lead. Miami pushed its lead to six, 13-7, off a senior guard Quinten Rollins layup at 6:13 after a Johnson steal. The Timberwolves closed to within one point twice in the first half, the last coming at 11:23, when they trailed 20-19.
Oswald scored four points and Eustace chipped in three points to fuel an 8-0 Miami run over the next two minutes that lifted the RedHawks to a 28-19 lead with 9:15 to go in the first half.
Moore knocked down a 3-pointer to ignite another 8-0 flurry that lifted the RedHawks to their largest lead of the half, 38-27. The Timberwolves rounded out the half on a 4-0 run to close the gap to seven at the intermission, 38-31. Northwood continued its run, scoring the first four points of the second half to pull within three of the RedHawks, 38-35.
Miami used a 10-0 run late in the second half to build a 17-point lead by the 4:26 mark, 71-54. A layup by Moore with 3:33 to play gave Miami its largest lead of the game, 75-57. The Timberwolves scored 12 points over the final 1:58 of the game to close the gap to single digits, but Miami persevered for the 76-71 win.
Northwood was led by Darvin Ham with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Will Bowles recorded 10 points and a game-high 14 points.
Miami opens the 2013-14 season at Notre Dame on Friday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m.
