NKU's Doss earns second straight A-Sun Player of the Week honors
MACON, Ga. (WKRC) -- For the second consecutive week, Northern Kentucky University's Melody Doss has been named the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Doss averaged 26.5 points, six rebounds, three steals and 2.5 rebounds per game last week. In games against Illinois State and North Carolina Wilmington, she went 21-for-30 (.700) from the floor and 3-for-4 from behind the 3-point arc. Doss also finished perfect from the free throw line (8-for-8).
"What a great honor for Melody and for her teammates," NKU head coach Dawn Plitzuweit said. "We have some very good competition coming up next with our road game at Youngstown State as well as when we return home to take on Western Kentucky, so we are working hard to prepare all of our young ladies for those two elite teams."
On Wednesday, she scored career-high 29 points on 11-for-12 shooting from the floor in a 61-48 victory over Illinois State at The Bank of Kentucky Center. She also grabbed nine rebounds, collected five steals and blocked three shots for the Norse.
With Illinois State holding a 40-36 advantage with 10:08 remaining in the game, Doss scored 12 of NKU's next 13 points to give the Norse the lead (49-43) for good.
Doss, a 6-foot forward from Greenwood, Ind., led NKU with 24 points as the Norse fell to UNCW, 65-62, on Saturday. She scored 13 of her points in the first half and added three rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots on the day.
For the season, Doss leads the Atlantic Sun in scoring, averaging 25.7 points, and free-throw percentage, going 10-for-10 from the charity stripe in the first three games. She is shooting 62 percent from the field, which ranks second in the conference, and ranks third in the Atlantic Sun in blocked shots with seven (2.3 per game).
NKU plays at Youngstown State on Wednesday at 5:15 p.m. before returning home on Saturday to welcome Western Kentucky to The Bank of Kentucky Center at 7 p.m.
