Balanced Scoring Leads UC Women to 58-33 Exhibition Win
CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- The University of Cincinnati women's basketball team opened play for the 2013-14 season Monday evening, earning a 58-33 exhibition win over Southern Polytechnic State at Fifth Third Arena.
The Bearcats overcame a slow start offensively to eventually score 32 second-half points while shooting 46.4 percent in the frame. The Cincinnati defense forced 22 turnovers and churned out 20 points from the miscues. UC also held a 38-20 advantage in points in the paint.
Cincinnati played a total of 12 players in the contest, 11 finishing with double-digit minutes. Eleven of the 12 also grabbed at least one rebound and scored at least one point.
UC was led offensively by Jeanise Randolph (Chicago, Ill./Thornton Fractional North) who totaled 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting. In a regular-season contest the scoring total would have been the second highest of her career. Randolph also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Dayeesha Hollins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) added nine points during just 13 minutes of action, seven of which came from the free throw line.
Alyesha Lovett (Newark, N.J./Malcolm X Shabazz) added six points while Jasmine Whitfield (Crestwood, Ky./South Oldham) and Alexis Durley (Houston, Texas/Andy Dekaney) each contributed five. Freshman Bianca Quisenberry (Springfield, Ohio/Tecumseh) added four points, four assists and three steals during her 18 minutes of action.
The game opened with a defensive tone as the two teams combined to score just seven points during the first 8:32 of the contest. From there the Bearcats would find their offensive rhythm, scoring 20 points to close out the opening frame.
UC built a lead they would not relinquish during the final four minutes of the first half, thanks to a 9-0 run. The Bearcats scored seven times from the charity stripe during the spurt while also adding a lay-up from Quisenberry.
Cincinnatis scoring run continued in the second half with UC adding six more points before Southern Polytechnic State added a score with 17:44 to play in the second half. Overall, Cincinnati kept the Hornets scoreless for a five minute and 28 second span.
From there the Bearcats never led by fewer than 12 points, eventually taking their largest lead of the game with a final score from Marley Hill (Cleveland, Ohio/Columbus Africentric) with seven seconds remaining.
The Bearcats open the 2013-14 regular season Saturday evening, making the short trip across the river to face Northern Kentucky University. The contest at the Bank of Kentucky center is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip time.
