Xavier women falls short against Longwood
CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- The Xavier womens basketball team fell to the Longwood Lancers 67-64 Thursday night at Cintas Center. Senior Shatyra Hawkes (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances Academy) finished with a team-high 20 points to go with four rebounds and three assists.
With the loss, the Musketeers fall to 2-2 on the season, while the Lancers improve to 3-1.
Four Xavier players scored in double digits in the loss. Sophomore guard Jenna Crittendon (Union, Ky./Ryle) scored 12 points and tied the team-lead in rebounds with seven. Sophomore Aliyah Zantt (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg HS) chipped in 11 points, four rebounds and two steals, while freshman forward Leah Schaefer (Alexandria, Ky./Highlands HS) poured in a career-high 11 points and led the team in steals (four) and blocks (three).
It was a game of runs for both teams in the first half. Xaviers first points came when senior guard Ashley Wanninger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) drove the lane and scored with 18:50 remaining. A pair of free throws from Hawkes gave XU a 4-3 lead with 17:27 left in the period. Longwood then went on an 18-0 run that put the Lancers ahead 21-4. After an 11 :01 scoreless drought, Schaefer scored a bucket to end the Longwood run.
The Musketeers employed a 15-2 run to cut the Lancer lead down to 23-19. During that span, Hawkes nailed a pair of three-pointers, Zantt added a trey of her own and Schaefer registered a steal and broke away to score a layup.
The Lancers finished the half with a 10-3 run over the final 3:07 to take a 33-22 lead heading into the locker room.
Hawkes led the Musketeers with 11 points in the first half, six of which came off of three-pointers.
The second half started much like the first half. Longwood jumped out early, going on a 12-3 run to increase their lead to 20. Xavier responded with an 18-4 run to begin their comeback. As the game wore on, the Musketeers continued to chip away at Longwoods lead. A Schaefer steal and subsequent layup cut Longwoods lead to two. Later on, Hawkes had an isolation layup with 1:05 remaining to cut the lead to one.
Xavier was able to take their first lead since 17:27 in the first half when Hawkes threw a half-court pass to Crittendon for a breakaway layup to put the team up one. However, Lancers forward Heather Tobeck hit a three to put the Lancer back up two points with just 30 seconds left in regulation. XU had a chance to tie the game at the end, but Hawkes missed a three-point buzzer-beater and Longwood picked up the 67-64 non-conference victory.
The Muskeeters shot 41.1 percent (23-of-56) from the floor and hit 3-of-17 from behind the arc. The Musketeers also forced 20 turnovers, recorded nine steals and had nine assists on 23 made baskets. The Blue and White also had 36 points in the paint and eight fast-break points.
Longwood shot 42.1 percent (24-of-57), but Xaviers perimeter defense held the Lancers to 18.8% (3-of-16) from three-point territory.
Lancers guard Daeisha Brown led the team in scoring with 26 points. She also had five assists and grabbed six rebounds.
The Muskeeters will now head to the 2013 Paradise Jam in the US Virgin Islands (Nov. 28-30), where they will play Duke, Kansas and Central Michigan during the three-day tournament.
