NKU's Billups Collects Atlantic Sun Weekly Award
MACON, Ga. (WKRC) -- Northern Kentucky University's Jalen Billups has been named the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Billups, a 6-foot-6 sophomore post player, shot 81.2 percent (13-for-16) from the field and averaged 18.0 points in two games last week. Billups scored 13 of his career-high 25 points in overtime as Northern Kentucky collected its first victory of the season with a 91-86 win over previously unbeaten Tulane in the Cure UCD Classic in New Orleans, La.
In the overtime, Billups controlled the paint with five baskets, including a thunderous dunk. Billups, in fact, did not miss a shot in the extra session and finished 10-for-11 from the field with seven rebounds and three blocks. He scored 10 straight points for the Norse in overtime, and his three free throws in the final 20 seconds iced the victory.
Jalen is very deserving of this award, Norse head coach Dave Bezold said. He absolutely took the game over on Saturday night during the overtime. Jalen has the ability and strength to dominate a game inside, and he did just that Saturday night when we needed big plays.
Billups, a graduate of Shroder High School in Cincinnati, leads the Atlantic Sun Conference in field-goal percentage at .700. He also averages 10.8 points per game.
Billups joins Eshaunte Jones as the only two Northern Kentucky performers to earn the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week recognition. Jones collected the recognition twice last season.
Northern Kentucky concludes the Cure UCD Classic this weekend in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, with games against Southeast Missouri State (Friday) and Texas State (Saturday). Both of those games will tip off at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time.
