Xavier women fall to Central Michigan in Paradise Jam finale
ST. THOMAS, USVI (WKRC) -- Freshman Kayla Davis (Brampton, Ontario/St. Marguerite d'Youville) scored a career-high 13 points as the Xavier womens basketball team fell to Central Michigan, 88-62, in the final game of the 2013 Paradise Jam at the University of the Virgin Islands.
With the loss, XU falls to 3-4 overall, while the Chippewas improve to 2-4 on the season.
The Musketeers, who entered the contest ranked third in the BIG EAST in three-point field goals made per game (7.6) this season, knocked down 4-of-22 shots from behind the arc, while CMU made 18-of-32 from long distance.
Davis added two boards and a steal and scored her career-high 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor in just 14 minutes of playing time. Seniors Shatyra Hawkes (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances Academy) and Ashley Wanninger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) added 12 points each, while sophomore Jenna Crittendon (Union, Ky./Ryle HS) chipped in with eight points and six rebounds.
Hawkes knocked down a jumper for the first points of the game just 25 seconds into the half. CMU then used an 11-0 run to grab an 11-2 advantage with 17:33 left in the opening period. XU pulled within three points (14-11; 14:07) after back-to-back triples from Wanninger.
Central Michigan went on to outscore the Musketeers 32-21 over the final 14 minutes of the opening half and took a 46-32 lead into the locker room at the intermission. The Chippewas knocked down six of their 10 first half three pointers during the 32-21 run.
CMU opened the second half with a 15-6 run to go in front 61-38 with 13:58 remaining in regulation. The Blue and White fought back by employing a 14-6 run, highlighted by six points from sophomore Aliyah Zantt (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg HS), to trim their deficit to 15 points (67-52) at the 7:30 mark.
The Chippewas went on to outscore the Musketeers 21-10 over the final 7:17 of the period and picked up the 88-62 victory
The Blue and White are back in action on Wednesday, December 4 when they host Murray State at Cintas Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. ET.
