Miami drops season finale to Ball State, 55-14

MUNCIE, Ind (WKRC) -- Miami Universitys football team scored two touchdowns in the third quarter, but 28 second-quarter points by Ball State University were too much to overcome as the RedHawks fell, 55-14 at Scheumann Stadium on Friday afternoon.

Ball State (10-2; 7-1 Mid-American Conference) scored once in the first quarter when Keith Wenning hit Jamill Smith on a 10-yard pass at the 8:30 mark, and the Scott Secor extra point gave the Cardinals an early 7-0 lead. Miami held the Cardinals scoreless for the next 12 minutes, but BSU scored four touchdowns over the final 11:06 of the second quarter to take a 34-0 lead into the half.

After forcing the Cardinals to go three-and-out to open up the second half, the RedHawks (0-12; 0-8 MAC) capped a four-play, 71-yard drive with a 58-yard touchdown strike from sophomore quarterback Drew Kummer to junior wide receiver Dawan Scott with 11:33 to go in the third quarter. The 58-yard pass was the longest play of the season for the RedHawks.

Miami scored its second touchdown with 5:58 to go in the third quarter when redshirt freshman quarterback Austin Gearing rushed into the end zone from 3 yards out to punctuate an 11-play, 75-yard drive. Sophomore Kaleb Patterson booted his second extra point of the day to cut the RedHawk deficit to 38-14. That, however, was the last of the scoring output for the RedHawks.

Scott finished 117 yards with 51 rushing yards and 66 receiving yards. Sophomore Josh Dooley led the RedHawks with 12 tackles.
