Muskie women earn win over Austin Peay

CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- Senior Ashley Wanninger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) scored a career-high 25 points as the Xavier womens basketball team defeated Austin Peay, 72-59, in non-conference action Saturday night at Cintas Center.
With the win the XU improves to 5-4, while the Lady Govs fall to 3-5.

The Musketeers, who entered the contest ranked fourth in the conference in three-point field goals per game (6.8), knocked down 10-of-27 shots from behind the arc, highlighted by five from the sharp-shooting Wanninger.

Wanninger added three rebounds and one assist to go with her career-high 25 points. The senior shot 8-of-14 from the field and 5-of-8 from long distance. Sophomore Jenna Crittendon (Union, Ky./Ryle HS) registered her first career double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Senior Shatyra Hawkes (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances Academy) added 13 points and a game-high six assists, while sophomore Aliyah Zantt (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg HS) chipped in with five points and seven boards.

The Musketeers jumped out to an early 8-0 lead behind the scoring of Wanninger and Crittendon. Trailing 28-17 at the 6:46 mark, Austin Peay used a 13-0 to close the half and took a 30-29 lead into the locker room at the intermission.

XU quickly bounced back at the start of the second half, employing a 27-5 spurt over the first 7:05 of the period to take a commanding 55-35 lead. The Musketeers never looked back and used some hot shooting from the field (16-of-32; 50 percent) in the second half to cruise to the 72-59 victory.
