Cyclones earn a victory over Wheeling, 4-2
WHEELING, W.V. (WKRC) -- Jonathan Hazens three-point night highlighted another solid performance for the Cincinnati Cyclones (21-9-1-1) as they prevailed over the Wheeling Nailers (15-12-1-5) by a 4-2 final score in front of 2,432 at WesBanco Arena on Thursday night.
The Cyclones got on the board first when Jonathan Hazen backhanded a rebound past Mike Condon (W, 25 saves, 10-5-0-4) at the 10:05 mark. Dan Eves and newcomer Phil Bushbacher earned assists on the goal, and thanks to a five-save effort from Joe Howe (W, 20 saves, 6-0-1), Cincinnati led it 1-0 after 20 minutes.
Anthony Luciani briefly put the Cyclones out in front by a 2-0 count when he buried a power play goal at 15:06. Unfortunately, the Nailers were finally able to light the lamp when Jacob Lagace caught a pass in the high slot and wristed home his third of the season just 54 seconds later. As the period wound down, both clubs had a couple more chances to add to their offensive totals but came up empty as the middle frame ended with the Cyclones ahead 2-1.
Cincinnati wasted little time before finding the net again in the final stanza; similar to his first goal, Hazen found himself open in the low slot, caught a pass from Eves and notched his second lamplighter of the night to give the Cyclones a 3-1 lead. Then, at 9:01 a heavy crash of the net jarred the puck loose with just enough time for Trevor Lewis to slam home his seventh goal of the year pushing the cushion to 4-1. The Nailers briefly threatened a comeback as Drew Schiestel blasted in a point shot to cut the home teams deficit to a pair. However, the Cyclones never relinquished the lead and sealed a 4-2 victory, their 21st of the season and 13th on the road.
