Miami falls to Akron 59-52

AKRON, Ohio (WKRC) -- Miami University's men's basketball team staged a late comeback after a double-figured deficit, but the RedHawks (5-9; 1-2 Mid-American Conference) could not complete the rally as they were edged at Akron (11-5; 3-0 MAC) on Wednesday evening, 59-52.

Senior forward Will Felder led all players with 16 points and had a team-leading seven rebounds. He was the lone RedHawk to score in double figures.

A triple by junior guard Will Sullivan at 19:38 and a layup from senior guard Quinten Rollins at 18:55 gave Miami a quick 5-0 lead. The RedHawks caused three Akron turnovers in the opening three minutes to help their efforts.

The Zips came back to knot the game twice at 11-11 and 13-13, but a 7-0 RedHawk surge off a freshman forward Joshua Oswald 3-pointer and a pair of buckets from Felder put the RedHawks out in front 20-13 with 5:35 to go in the opening half.

The teams traded baskets and a sophomore guard Geovonie McKnight jumper put the RedHawk lead back at seven at the 4:03 mark, 22-15. Akron retaliated with a 7-0 run to again tie the game, 22-22, but Miami took a 23-22 lead with 47 seconds left when Rollins sunk the first of two free throws. The Zips came down the floor and took their first lead of the game off a Demetrius Treadwell layup with 32 seconds to play, 24-23.

Miami had the ball for the last play of the half, and senior forward Bill Edwards drained a long jumper as time expired to hand the Red and White a 25-24 lead at the half.

Akron opened the second half on a 13-3 run to claim a 37-28 advantage by the 12:43 mark with the lone RedHawk points coming off a Sullivan trey at as the shot clock expired at 16:14. Miami rattled off six straight points, capped by a Felder layup at 12:43, to pull within three of the Zips, 37-34. Akron pushed its lead to eight points, but Miami was able to cut the deficit to four off and Edwards 3-pointer at 17:52 to close within 42-38.

The Zips extended their lead to double figures and held an 11-point advantage, 55-44, with 3:22. But Miami would not relent, and the RedHawks used a 6-0 run over the next two minutes to close within five off a McKnight dunk at 1:09. After a pair of Quincy Diggs free throws to put the Akron lead back at seven, but Miami came back down the floor and closed within five off an Edwards layup with 17 seconds to play. Treadwell sunk a pair of free throws with 15 seconds left to clinch the game for Akron.

McKnight finished with eight points, four steals and four assists, while Rollins chipped in four assists, two steals and six rebounds. With his two steals, Rollins moved into second on Miamis career steal chart with 176. Rollins four assists moved him into 10th at Miami for career assists with 329.

Treadwell paced Akron with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Miami continues a two-game road stretch when the RedHawks travel to Ball State for at 2 p.m. game on Saturday, Jan. 18.
