UC women top Houston, 59-50

CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- The University of Cincinnati womens basketball team held off a second-half rally from Houston Saturday afternoon inside Hofheinz Pavilion to pick up their first win as a member of the American Athletic Conference.                                

The Bearcats held a 36-22 lead at the break, but opened the second half going 3-of-17 to allow the Cougars to cut the advantage down to 43-36 with 7:47 to play. However, the Bearcats were able to go 4-of-5 from the floor and 7-of-9 from the charity stripe down the stretch  to hold off the Cougars and earn a 59-50 win.

Jeanise Randolph (Chicago, Ill/Thornton Fractional North) lead UCs offensive effort with 22 points, shooting 11-of-18 from the floor. The senior forward picked up her sixth double-double of the season, pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds. She also had three steals and one assist.

Dayeesha Hollins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) was the only other Bearcat to finish in double figures with 15 points.  The senior guard was 2-of-3 from three-point range and 5-of-7 from the free throw line. She also had a game-high six assists.

Alyesha Lovett (Newark, N.J./Malcolm X Shabazz) added seven points while Marley Hill (Cleveland, Ohio/Columbus Africentric) contributed six points. Chelsea Jamison (Indianapolis, Ind./Broad Ripple) dished out five assists, grabbed five rebounds and added four points.

Overall UC shot 40.4 percent while limiting the Cougars to just 31.6 percent. The Cincinnati defense once again limited an opponent below their season scoring average, as the 50 points for Houston are 17.4 points below their average. The Bearcats were also able to out-rebound Houston 43-38 and score 30 points in the paint.

Houston was led in scoring by Teonna Campbell, who poured in 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting. The senior forward also led the Cougars in rebounds (7) and steals (2).

Randolph led the Bearcats to open the game, going 6-of-6 from the floor during the first nine minutes, scoring 12 straight points for UC. The surge pushed the Bearcats to an 18-8 lead with 11:20 left in the first half.

Houston briefly countered with a 5-0 run, capped by a three from Marissa Ashton, which cut the lead to 20-17 with 7:41 left in the frame. Following a timeout by head coach Jamelle Elliott, Hollins answered for Cincinnati with a three to push the lead back to six.

From there, Cincinnati was able to close out the half on a 13-3 run as the defense held Houston without a basket during the final 6:14 of the half. Hill added four points while Hollins contributed five during the run.

Cincinnati will have seven days off before returning to action at home against Temple on Saturday, January 18. The Bearcats will square off with the Owls at 2 p.m. inside Fifth Third Arena.
