Wheeling takes 3-1 contest over Cyclones

WHEELING, WV (WKRC) -- Cody Sylvesters third period goal proved to be the game-winner as the Wheeling Nailers (19-16-1-5) narrowly squeaked by the Cincinnati Cyclones (24-12-1-1) by a 3-1 final score in front of 2,068 at WesBanco Arena on Sunday afternoon.

The Nailers drew first blood at 6:02 of the opening frame, when Jacob Lagace cut into the Cincinnati zone and fired a low wrist shot past Rob Madore (L, 37 saves, 11-5-0) to make it 1-0. However, Josh Shalla lit the lamp for the sixth time this season right off of the face-off as he sniped one past Peter Mannino (W, 22 saves, 1-0-0-0) to even things at one. Despite a pair of Cyclones power plays, the teams remained deadlocked after 20 minutes.

Both teams played a defensive second period as neither could find the net. Unfortunately, early in the final stanza, Cody Sylvester barely gained the zone onside and backhanded a seeing-eye wrist shot past Madore to push the Nailers ahead by one. In the final minutes, Cincinnati pulled the goaltender in hopes of rallying but Max MacKay hit the empty net at 18:45 to seal a 3-1 victory.
