Doss earns fourth A-Sun weekly honor
MACON, Ga. (WKRC) -- Northern Kentucky University's Melody Doss has been named the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week for the fourth time this season, the league office announced on Monday.
Doss averaged 19 points and eight rebounds per game as NKU captured two wins to start Atlantic Sun play. She finished 15-for-30 (.500) from the field, connected on four 3-pointers and collected three assists and two steals.
"Melody played with a heightened sense of urgency on the road this weekend, and it is great to see her rewarded with this honor," NKU head coach Dawn Plitzuweit said. "The best part about Melody is that she is more excited about starting our conference season off with two victories than anything else."
Doss started Atlantic Sun action with her third double-double of the season. She scored 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Norse defeated South Carolina Upstate, 76-60, in Spartanburg, S.C. She added two steals while being perfect from behind both the 3-point line (3-for-3) and the free-throw line (3-for-3).
She added 14 of her points in the second half after getting into early foul trouble. She scored 10 of NKU's first 14 points of the second half and sparked a 22-5 run for a 56-38 lead to take control of the game with 9:24 remaining.
The 6-foot forward from Greenwood, Ind., followed with a 14-point, five-rebound effort in NKU's 73-63 road victory over East Tennessee State on Saturday afternoon in Johnson, City, Tenn., to help the Norse hold off a late Bucs rally and stay undefeated in the Atlantic Sun.
Doss continues to lead the conference in scoring by averaging 18.2 points per game and ranks second in 3-point shooting, connecting on 47.5 percent (19-for-40) of her attempts from behind the arc. She is third in the Atlantic Sun in field-goal percentage (.534) and free-throw percentage (.857), as well as fourth in blocked shots (1.5 bpg).
Doss started the season by earning back-to-back Atlantic Sun Player of the Week honors after the first two weeks of the season and also received the recognition in Week 4 after the Robert Morris Thanksgiving Classic where she earned Tournament Most Valuable Player honors.
NKU returns home Thursday to face Mercer at The Bank of Kentucky Center at 7 p.m. Live stats, video and audio links will be available at nkunorse.com.
