Kilpatrick, Cronin Named Finalists for National Awards

CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- University of Cincinnati senior guard Sean Kilpatrick and head coach Mick Cronin were named finalists for separate national awards by the United States Basketball Writers Association on Thursday. Kilpatrick was chosen as one of 15 players for the Oscar Robertson Trophy while Cronin was selected as one of 10 coaches for the Henry Iba Award.

Kilpatrick leads the American Athletic Conference in scoring at 20.5 points per game and in three-pointers made with 2.8 per contest. He is fifth in three-point shooting at 85.1 percent.

A Naismith Trophy Midseason Top 30 selection, Kilpatrick is averaging 25.3 points with 29 three-pointers over UCs last eight games. He has led UC in scoring in each of the last 14 games and been the games top scorer in each of the last seven contests. He has scored 20 or more points in 16 games this season for the Bearcats.

He joined former UC legend Oscar Robertson as the only two players in program history to eclipse 2,000 career points when he scored a game-high 28 points against Louisville on Feb. 22.

Despite being picked fourth in the conference and receiving only one vote in the preseason Associated Press poll, Cronin has guided Cincinnati (24-4, 13-2 American) to a No. 11 national ranking and first place in the American heading into Saturdays game at UConn.

The Bearcats have been ranked in the AP Top 25 each of the last seven weeks. UC is 3-1 against ranked teams this season and is 6-3 vs. the RPI Top 50.

The Bearcats won their first 11 conference games and are enjoying their best season since the 2001-02 campaign (finished 31-4). A win over UConn on Saturday would give UC as many as 14 league wins in a season for the only the fourth time in school history.

UC ranks No. 4 in the nation in scoring defense (57.4 points) and has held its opponent under 70 points in 26 of 28 games this season. The Bearcats rank among the nations Top 25 teams in eight other categories: turnover margin (12th at 3.7), total steals (16th at 228); total blocks (17th at 159); scoring margin (18th at 11.8); field goal percentage defense (20th at .393); offensive rebounds (21st at 13.7); blocked shots per game (23rd at 5.7) and steals per game (25th at 8.1).

The Bearcats have won at least 20 games for four consecutive seasons.

Cronin ranks second in school history with 159 wins at Cincinnati.
