Cyclones topple Toledo, 5-2
TOLEDO, Ohio (WKRC) -- Jonathan Hazen capped off a three-point night as the Cincinnati Cyclones (28-18-1-1) scored four unanswered goals to beat the Toledo Walleye (16-28-3-0) by a 5-2 final score in front of 8,200 at Huntington Center on Saturday night.
The Cyclones roared out of the gate with the first ten shots of the contest, and picked up an early 1-0 lead as a result. After Devon Kroghs shot from the right circle rang off the crossbar, Anthony Luciani was there to deposit the rebound for his team-leading 19th goal of the season at 3:30. Unfortunately, the Walleye would answer back; having just one shot on net at the time, Max Shalunov and Kevin Lynch lit the lamp just 50 seconds apart to give the home team a 2-1 advantage. And despite outshooting their foes 11-8 in the first frame, the Cyclones trailed by one heading into the first intermission.
The first half of the second period remained a stalemate, as neither side could find the net. However, that changed at 13:28 when Trevor Lewis cut into the Toledo zone and sniped a shot over Mac Carruth (L, 27 saves, 8-12-0) to even things at two. And thanks to 10 middle period saves by Cyclones goalie Scott Darling (W, 27 saves, 3-0-0), the teams were deadlocked through 40 minutes.
Cincinnati regained the lead just 5:54 into the final period when Jonathan Hazen pick pocketed Toledos Russ Sinkewich and fired a high wrist shot into the net. Not even five minutes later, Byron Froese lit the lamp against his former team as he banked one off Carruths pads from right along the goal line. The Cyclones sealed off their scoring at 13:25 when Hazen finished off a beautiful rush with Brian Nugent and Pat OKeefe to make it a 5-2 contest. Cincinnati went on to win by the same score.
