Cyclones earn a 5-2 road victory over South Carolina
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WKRC) -- Jonathan Hazens three-point night highlighted a 5-2 win for the Cincinnati Cyclones (30-19-1-1) over the South Carolina Stingrays (31-15-1-3) in front of 4,092 at North Charleston Coliseum on Friday night.
The Cyclones wasted little time getting on the board in the opening period, as Jonathan Hazen sniped home his 14th goal of the season at 1:55 to give the visiting team a 1-0 edge. They made it 2-0 at 10:48 when a pass from the corner banked off of Brian Nugent and past goaltender Jeff Jakaitis (L, 16 saves, 23-9-1-2). The Stingrays earned a lamplighter of their own at 14:16 when Patrick Gaul fed Jack Downing in front, who proceeded to lift a shot past the glove of Joe Howe (W, 28 saves, 10-3-1). The Cyclones held the one-goal cushion after 20 minutes of play.
The Cyclones broke the game open midway through the middle stanza as Trevor Lewis and Josh McFadden scored at 10:34 and 15:16 respectively to make it a 4-1 contest. The Stingrays got one back at 16:50 when a loose puck in the high slot was deposited by Drew Baker to pull his team to within a pair at the second intermission.
The third period saw a much more physical style of hockey; with less than six minutes to play, the teams traded roughing and fighting penalties in what nearly turned into a line-brawl. The Cyclones, however, maintained their two-goal edge into the final minute when Josh McFadden fired a puck into the empty net with 13 seconds to play sealing a 5-2 Cincinnati win.
Cincinnati will wrap up their weekend swing through the South Division on Monday night against the Greenville Road Warriors at 7:00pm. Fans can hear all the action of the game on the Cyclones Radio Network (CyclonesHockey.com, America One, Cyclones Mobile App) beginning at 6:30pm.
