NKU falls on the road at Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (WKRC) -- Keith McDougald and Jarvis Haywood combined for 41 points, nine rebounds and eight assists as Jacksonville posted a 95-77 victory against visiting Northern Kentucky on Saturday afternoon in an Atlantic Sun Conference game.
McDougald poured in 22 points and dished out six assists for Jacksonville, which improved to 9-13 overall, 5-6 in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Haywood added 19 points and five rebounds for the Dolphins, who led by as many as 25 points in the second half and avenged an earlier loss to the Norse to even the all-time series at 2-2.
Jacksonville used a 15-0 run in the first half to turn a 9-5 deficit into a 20-9 lead. Haywood scored six straight points to ignite that spurt for Jacksonville. The Dolphins extended their advantage to as many as 20 before the break and settled for a 51-33 lead at halftime.
Jacksonville connected on 57.1 percent of its shots before the break including 6-for-10 from 3-point range.
"Jacksonville has some very good players who can really score, but you can't give up 51 points in the first half and expect to win," Norse head coach Dave Bezold said. "They shot 57 percent from the field in the first half, and it's nearly impossible to overcome that on the road."
Jacksonville finished with a 40-25 advantage on the boards, with Marcel White grabbing a game-high seven rebounds and adding 11 points. The Dolphins cooled off in the second half from the field and shot 49.1 percent for the game, but they were 31-for-36 at the free-throw line to seal the win.
Jordan Jackson scored 18 points and added six assists to lead Northern Kentucky, which dropped to 8-15 overall, 4-7 in the A-Sun. Jackson also collected four steals.
Todd Johnson made four 3-pointers and added 15 points for the Norse, who shot 48.9 percent from the field. Jalen Billups finished with 11 points for Northern Kentucky, which was 22-for-31 from the free-throw line and 9-for-27 from 3-point range. Tyler White added seven points and six rebounds.
