UC fans gather to watch Selection Sunday
CLIFTON, Ohio (WKRC) -- Hundreds of Bearcat basketball fans sat in Fifth Third Arena Sunday to find out where their team is going and who they will play in the start of the NCAA Tournament.
The watch party returned to UC as the Bearcats head into the tournament with their best record under head coach Mick Cronin. Most fans are happy with the fifth seed placement, saying that they expected UC to fall in the four to five seed range.
There were times when the arena was filled with boos, however, like when the teams Ohio State, Louisville and Xavier were announced and then when analysts picked Harvard to beat UC.
Throughout the selection process, cheerleaders and free t-shirts kept fans interested as they waited for the final region announcement. For many, seeding and opponent didn't seem to matter; many believe the Bearcats are going far.
"If the defense stays strong, there ain't nobody that can score on us, ain't nobody that can beat us," says fan Chris Mullins.
But CBS sports analysts Seth Davis and Doug Gottlieb disagree.
"They are always kind of hating on us, so just keep it coming, keep it coming, it only makes our team inspired to do well, so they can say it all they want, it's not going to matter, we will beat Harvard in the first round, says fan Shannon Wurthman.
"The cats are back, that was our pitch when we came. I see it, I see the momentum. I see the fan support coming back, we're excited around here, happy about what the team is doing," says former Bearcat Corey Blunt. Blunt says he sees a similar fight in this team that his 1992 Final Four team had.
Fans hope the team can add another banner to the collection this March.
UC will face off against Harvard in Spokane, Washington on Thursday.
