Kilpatrick earns honors from AAC, Media outlets
CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- University of Cincinnati standout Sean Kilpatrick earned numerous accolades on Monday. The senior guard was named the Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T National Player of the Week and American Athletic Conference Player of the Week. He also was named First Team All-America by the Sporting News, NBCSports.com and Bleacher Report.
Kilpatrick earned his third conference player of the week award after averaging 29.0 points and 2.5 assists while shooting 54.3 percent from the field (19 of 35); 37.5 percent from three-point range (6 of 16) and 77.8 percent from the free-throw line (14 of 18) during a 2-0 week that clinched a share of the league regular-season championship for the Bearcats.
Kilpatrick scored a season-high 34 points on 11-of-18 shooting with a pair of three-pointers and 10-of-11 shooting at the foul line against Memphis on Senior Night on March 6 at Fifth Third Arena. He followed that performance less than 40 hours later with a game-high 24 points on 8-of-17 shooting with four three-pointers in a 70-66 win at Rutgers on March 8.
The native of Yonkers, N.Y., ranks first in the conference in scoring (20.9 points) and three-pointers made (2.8). Kilpatrick has led Cincinnati in scoring in each of the last 17 games and in 28 of 31 contests this season. He has scored 20 or more points in 17 games this season.
Kilpatrick is averaging 25.1 points and 4.8 rebounds with 2.6 assists and 37 three-pointers over the last 11 games.
Kilpatrick was previously named the American's Player of the Week in back-to-back weeks in February (Feb. 3 and Feb. 10). He has been selected to the league's weekly honor roll nine times.
NATIONAL MEDIA TABS KILPATRICK AN ALL-AMERICAN
Kilpatrick was named First Team All-America by the Sporting News, NBCSports.com and Bleacher Report. Following are the media outlet's comments on Kilpatrick.
"There was one obvious responsibility for every opponent facing Cincinnati: stop Kilpatrick ... But even with extraordinary defensive attention paid to him, Kilpatrick regularly delivered huge games against the best teams Cincinnati played: 52 points in two games against Memphis, 56 in two games against Louisville, 42 in two games against Connecticut."
"(Kilpatrick's) efficiency numbers aren't terribly different from (Doug) McDermott's, but instead of playing in the nation's most efficient offense, he's playing in the nation's 101st most efficient offense."
"With 2,092 career points, Sean Kilpatrick will be remembered as one of the best players in Cincinnati history. And after leading the Bearcats to a share of the AAC title, he's finally getting the recognition he's long deserved on the national level, too."
BEARCATS MOVE UP IN NATIONAL POLLS
Cincinnati climbed two spots in the final Associated Press poll of the regular season on Monday moving from No. 15 to No. 13. The Bearcats climbed three positions in the USA Today poll, jumping from No. 15 to No. 12.
The Bearcats have been ranked in the AP Top 15 in each of the last eight weeks - a Mick Cronin coaching era high. It marks the longest stretch since the 2003-04 squad was listed in the Top 15 for eight straight weeks.
UC has been ranked in the top 25 of the AP poll each of the last 10 weeks after receiving only one vote in the preseason AP poll.
The Bearcats have been ranked in the AP poll at some point during each of the past four seasons. UC was ranked for 13 weeks in both the AP and USA Today polls a year ago - a Mick Cronin-era high.
UC has appeared in the AP poll 387 times in the poll's history, 12th most in the nation.
