Cyclones fall on the road to Wheeling, 2-0

WHEELING, West Virginia (WKRC) -- In one of the most defensive battles of the season, the Wheeling Nailers (31-24-1-5) snuck past the Cincinnati Cyclones (33-21-2-4) by a 2-0 final score in front of 2,901 at WesBanco Arena on Saturday night. Mike Condon (W, 31 saves, 19-11-0-4) earned his third shutout of the season.

After a scoreless first period where the Cyclones outshot the Nailers 10-5, the teams tried to get that all important first goal in the middle frame. But like the stanza before, both goaltenders remained perfect; Rob Madore (L, 22 saves, 14-11-0) had amassed 18 saves through 40 minutes while Wheelings Mike Condon also came up with 18 stops to keep the contest without a lamplighter.

An unfortunate turnover led to the games first goal just 2:27 into the third as Cody Sylvester went in all alone and fired in his 21st goal of the season. The Cyclones furiously attempted a comeback effort as the period continued, however, Condon made 13 final frame saves and Christiaan Minella potted an empty net strike with 19 seconds remaining to seal a 2-0 Nailers victory.
