Kentucky Oaks selections
CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- Ed Meyer, Track announcer and morning line odds maker for Belterra Park, makes his predictions for the Kentucky Oaks.
The first running of the Kentucky Oaks was on May 19, 1875, when Churchill Downs was known as the Louisville Jockey Club. The race was founded by Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr., along with the Kentucky Derby. The Oaks and the Derby are the oldest continuously contested sporting events in history, and the only horse races to be held at their original site since its conception. The Derby is a celebration of the Thoroughbred, and it belongs to fans from all walks. The Oaks has been called Louisvilles day at the races, and it showcases some of the most talented three-year-old fillies in the land.
Race #11 The (G-1) Kentucky Oaks 1 1/8 5:49 p.m. ET
#4 Rosalind (8-1) = Joel Rosario has the mount for Ken McPeek, and this daughter of Broken Vow is the most powerful come from behind runner in the field. She has faced tough gals all through her career, and the faster they run the better she likes it. With a bevy of speed in the race, you can look for Rosario to keep her tucked in tight along the rail and save ground until they hit the 3/8ths pole. Her two starts in 2014 have shown a new girl. Two races back she was a beaten favorite after getting steadied, and then transferred her late kick in the (G-1) Ashland at Keeneland. She has two works since her last race win, and I think the connections have her all figured out.
#13 Untapable (4-5) = Rosie Napravnik (43%) has the call for Steve Asmussen. This daughter of Tapit is as tough as a nickel steak, but shell be caught out wide with plenty of speed to her inside. She is 5/6 ITM lifetime, and 2/2 with wins at Churchill Downs. She has down very little wrong in her career, but at (4-5) and the #13 post she looks like a vulnerable favorite. I think shell be a major factor, but theres just too much to overcome from the far outside.
#11 My Miss Sophia (8-1) = Javier Castellano (28%) gets the mount for Todd Pletcher (25%), and they go to the winners circle at a (29%) clip. She is a lightly raced daughter of Unbridleds Song, and each effort shows a better filly. Her last race was an impressive win in the (G-2) Gazelle at Aqueduct, and each race looks better than the last. You can bet the leading money winning rider in the country will keep close tabs on Untapable and hell make her work for every step. She could be tough if she gets loose at the top of the lane.
#9 Unbridled Forever (12-1) = Robby Albarado in the irons for Dallas Stewart. This daughter of Unbridleds Song is ITM lifetime. Her style appears to be maturing nicely and with her win over the Churchill strip shell get motoring late when the speed fades. Her breeding cries out for more distance and today she gets an extra 1/8th of a mile to run. Her last race was a solid effort, and her last work shows readiness.
