XU adds to highly-ranked recruiting class
CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- Xavier University head coach Chris Mack announced today that he has received a signed athletic scholarship agreement from 6-2 guard Larry Austin Jr. from Springfield Lanphier High School in Springfield, Illinois.
Larry is a very tough minded, charismatic leader at the point guard position, said Mack. He plays the game to make his teammates better and excels in the open court. He is a competitor on both ends of the floor and we're excited about what he brings to Xavier Basketball. Larry is known for his toughness and will be a great fit for our program.
The Lanphier High School senior, a 2014 Class 3A First Team All-State selection, averaged 22.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.2 steals last season, while leading his team to a 27-2 record. Austin was a 2013 Class 3A Second Team All-State selection as a junior.
Austin is ranked as a three-star prospect by ESPN.com and rivals.com. Austin is regarded by 247sports.com as the No. 108 overall prospect and by the rivals site as the No. 117 prospect in the 2014 national rankings. ESPN lists Austin as the No. 24 point guard.
Austin is also a strong student with a 3.75 GPA.
Austin completes an impressive six-member recruiting class that is ranked in the top 10-20 nationally by most of the major recruiting services, including No. 13 by Scout.com. It is the highest ranked recruiting class in Xavier history.
The star-studded six-member recruiting class also includes 6-6 small forward Trevon Bluiett from Indianapolis (Ind.) Park Tudor School, 6-9 power forward Makinde London from Montverde (Fla.) Academy, 6-5 guard J.P. Macura from Lakeville (Minn.) North High School, 6-9 center Sean OMara from Lisle (Ill.) Benet Academy and 6-4 guard Edmond Sumner from Detroit Country Day School.
