Canada's Raonic defeats Johnson, advances to Cincinnati quarter-finals

MASON (AP) -- Milos Raonic advanced to the quarter-finals of the Western & Southern Open with a 6-7 (7), 7-6 (4), win over American qualifier Steve Johnson on Thursday.

Despite firing 30 aces to just four for his opponent, fifth-seed Raonic struggled to close out against Johnson. Raonic only converted two of eight break points, and was broken by Johnson while serving for the match up 5-4 in the third set.

Raonic was also down 4-3 to Johnson in the third-set tiebreaker, but the Canadian took the next four points, including a match-winning ace.
Raonic, from Thornhill, Ont., will face Italy's Fabio Fognini in the quarters.
