Bumpus Jones: Who is he and why is he in the news?

MIAMI (AP) -- With all eyes in baseball on the American League wild card race, a four-game winner for the Miami Marlins took the spotlight as he tossed a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the Tigers. Henderson Alvarez did not allow a base hit through nine innings and went to the bench hoping his team would get a run across the plate. The Marlins accomplished that when Giancarlo Stanton scored on a wild pitch by Detroit's Luke Putkonen.
Alvarez ends the season 5-6. In his final outing he struck out four, walked one and hit a batter. He joins Bumpus Jones of the Reds and two other pitchers who have tossed a no-hitter on the last day of the season. Jones by the way tossed the first last-day no-no in 1892.
