Reds Face Big Questions in Offseason

CINCINNATI, Ohio (Joe Webb) -- About 11:30 last night it officially became football season in Cincinnati.

When the Pirates finished off the Reds to win 6-2 in a one-and-done wild card game, a great season ended and a busy offseason began.

At Koch Sporting Goods they were boxing up a lot of the Reds shirts and jerseys.  At Great American Ball Park, workers took down the red, white and blue bunting they hung last week.

On Fountain Square, long time fan Barb Evers reflected on last nights loss.

"It was heartbreaking.  It really was. You could just see they were not playing to their full potential."

After winning 90 games, the Reds lost their last 6.  Four of them to the Pirates.  Some think manager Dusty Baker has to answer some difficult questions if he wants to keep his job.

Why did this team never come together?  ESPN 1530's Mo Egger told Local 12, "Why in the last week of the season were they so flat with so much to play for?  I  think they have to answer that if they bring Dusty Baker back."

The Reds lineup on Opening Day 2014 could look a lot different than last nights.  Center fielder Shin Soo Choo is expected to attract a big contract in free agency.  The Reds could also lose starting pitcher Bronson Arroyo.  Egger says with the money tied up in Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips contracts, the Reds are in a tight spot to replace what they could lose.

"Given what they're not likely to bring back and what they have right now-both good and bad- I don't know that this really gets better."

It will be a busy 180 days between last nights loss and Opening Day 2014.  Regardless of who comes and who goes, the real fans will be there.

"I still love the Reds," long time fan Patrick Trent said on the square Wednesday morning.  "Great team, great talent.  Castellinis doing a good job.  We've been to the playoffs and won two division titles.  We have a lot of things to be proud of."
