Reds and Yankees reportedly discuss trade

CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- Published reports indicate the Reds and Yankees discussed a trade of Cincinnati 2B Brandon Phillips for New York OF Brett Gardner. The Bronx Bombers reportedly turned down the offer, per CBS Sports' Jon Heyman.

The Yankees have signed free agents Jacoby Ellsbury and Carlos Beltran to play two of the outfield positions and still have Ichiro Suzuki on the roster.  They are seemingly interested in acquiring a starting pitcher in return for Gardner, who hit .273 with 8 HR and 24 stolen bases last year. He can become a free agent after the 2014 season.

Phillips still has 4 years left on his contract worth $50 million. He also has the Yankees on no-trade list. The 32-year-old hit .261 with 18 HR and 103 RBI last season.
