Opening Day Memories: No other day like it

CINCINNATI (Rob Braun) -- There is one day more than any other that brings more people across the tri-state together and holds some extra special memories.

If your a Reds fan you've probably been to an Opening Day 2014, or two or three.  If you're a big Reds fan Opening Day may define your spring and certainly has created family memories.

One of my most vivid memories as a kid was an Opening Day with my Grandpa Braun, we called him Pop.  It was raining like crazy before the game and we were sitting in his old Ford parked in an empty lot.  Crosley was right in front of me.  I can still hear the sounds and smell the popcorn and spilled beer and hear those vendors.  Remember the guy who would say, "Hey! Hey! Hey!  Get moody with a Hudy!"

Do you ever come down here to Queensgate looking for where Crosley field was?  We found it.  It's in an ally off of Findley Street where there is a plaque right here for Crosley Field and exactly where home plate was.

Remember they would park you in a lot where a shotgun house used to be.  Pop said there was no sense sitting in the car in the rain because it was Opening Day and we were going to the game.  He bought me one of those clear rain suits from a street vendor.  They were cheap, ugly and they worked.

Man I was living the high life!  I got out of school early with Pop going to the game.  I was gonna see Pete Rose, boy what a day, what a memory.

Later it was Riverfront for Opening Day.  Remember how cold those corridors could be in the spring?  And easy 10 degrees colder than your seat!  And the echo from the vendors and the people and shuffling we did to get to our seats.  And there he was again, Pete Rose on his way to making history in our Riverfront stadium.

Today Great American is reminsent of Crosley.  Closer to the players again but brighter and happier and a great place to put on a show.  Heck, it's the big show!  The closest most of us will ever get to being in the Big League.
