CINCINNATI (WKRC) – There’s a new warning from healthcare providers as moms who are pregnant want to deliver babies at home due to fear of COVID-19.

The American Academy of Pediatrics came out with new guidelines for women who are pregnant. It states it doesn’t recommend delivery at home, but does say it should only be considered in those women at low risk for complications.

The AAP says planned home births in the U.S. have been associated with a 2 to 3-fold increase in infant mortality and an increased risk for complications including seizures.

Women’s health specialists say they’re still getting a lot of questions about delivery outside the hospital and want moms to know delivering in the hospital is safe.

“I definitely want to caution patients because I have recently had a patient who actually has a heart issue and she has chosen to deliver at home,” said Dr. Sashana Gordon, OB-GYN at TriHealth. “I think a lot of patients for multiple reasons but now patients are interested in doing things the natural way. It's a very dangerous choice to make. I understand that patients are scared. Another thing that we've been doing is now we test every pregnant mom before she delivers for coronavirus so that we're able prepared or staffed and make sure that she has a safe delivery and that we take good care of her and baby."

The AAP guidelines are there to help with a conversation with your own doctor.
