CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Researchers at the UC College of Medicine say if you want to lower your risk of cardiac events, you may want to try and turn around a few habits that can be harmful to the heart.
For example, many say that now sitting is the new smoking. If you sit for hours a day, even if you exercise before or after work, you still don't give your heart the best benefit. Even taking two minute walks breaks may help.
Smoking is another habit that can play a role in cardiac events, including vaping.
Also, anything more than a drink or two a day is considered a risk for high blood pressure.
All these can influence heart disease and heart events such as sudden cardiac arrest.
"A cardiac arrest by definition is when the heart stops or it arrests, and there are a couple of different types of cardiac arrest. The most common is something called ventricular fibrillation, that's where the heart is beating so fast, too fast for the heart to pump. The other type would be if the heart is beating very, very slowly and it's not able to pump," said Dr. Richard Becker, cardiologist at UC College of Medicine.
Becker is also conducting a trial on how to treat those crazy heart rhythms.
It uses an Apple Watch to track heart rhythms. They can see if you need to take medication short-term, only when the heart beat is off.
