Hoxworth asking for platelet donors

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - There is a plea out for you to roll up your sleeve and help patients in area hospitals and cancer centers.
Hoxworth Blood Centers are looking for people to donate platelets. Hospitals and care centers for patients are experiencing a critical need for platelets. The team at Hoxworth says at Cincinnati Children's Hospital, they have seen the need go up by about 30 percent for platelets, compared to a year ago.
Platelets are used for specific therapies to assist patients, specifically for cancer, burns and care for traumatic injuries. Many people who can donate blood can be platelet donors, but it does take a little extra time compared to traditional or whole blood donation.

The interesting thing about platelets is that sometimes if you are able to be a specific match, they will let you know that your platelets are needed to help an anonymous person. It can be richly rewarding to know you can help save a life in a way someone else could not.
