Local surgeons lessen pain and recovery time post-surgery
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Local surgeons say a few changes in the operating room can make a big difference in patient outcomes.
A good surgery plan can help get patients home faster and lower the odds that they will need long-term pain medications.
Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Kevin Shaw, of OrthoCincy, replaced a patient's hip joint with a new and improved version.
"I think it went really well. We saw everything very well, very efficiently," said Dr. Shaw.
For example, in just a few hours after the procedure occurred the patient had a good chance of going home early.
"It depends on how he feels, if he feels well we can let him go this afternoon or if he's slow on his feet he might stay overnight," Dr. Shaw said after he had finished the surgery.
What makes that possible is that doctors like Dr. Shaw are getting a good pain nerve block before surgery and injecting numbing medicine around soft tissue that helps with post recovery.
"The other thing we do is we are more precise with the surgery, a little quicker with it and we don't lose all that much blood. If a person is healthy and fit coming into the surgery we can easily accomplish the therapy and get home that same day."
A critical step in reducing the odds for any type of dependence on pain medications is having the prescriptions be tightly controlled.
