New therapy at OrthoCincy looks to reduce joint pain
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A new therapy to help reduce the pain in your hips and your knees could help you find relief in a whole new way.
Dr. Joshua Murphy at OrthoCincy is one of just a handful of surgeons in the country providing the therapy.
Rather than invasive surgery, the therapy uses cells from your own body to help in healing. The therapy uses your own stem cells to beat pain. The fat is taken from the body by liposuction.
“And we get a concentrate of your own fat cells which we can then inject back into your own body,” said Dr. Murphy.
Since stem cells take on the property of other cells, they sort of recruit "healing" where it's needed.
Because they are your body's own cells, you cannot reject them. The main risk is simply that it won't work well enough to relieve your pain.
It's all part of a procedure done right in the doctor’s office, and it is approved by the Food and Drug Administration. But it's so new it's not covered by most medical insurance plans.
It can run $4,000-$5,000.
