Caged tiger at prom sparks uproar
FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WKRC) - A Florida high school had a caged tiger at its prom and parents are outraged.
The exotic animal was rolled into the DoubleTree Hotel Miami Airport and Convention Center for the prom which had a theme of "Welcome to the Jungle."
Maria Castellanos, whose daughter attended the prom, told WPLG that she was concerned for the safety of the students and the tiger.
"That tiger was in distress. The reason he's pacing up and down, up and down, with his tail going and his ears all folded back, is showing you distress," she said. "These animals are not entertainment."
A spokesperson for the high school released a statement saying:
The tiger, which was displayed for a few minutes in a cage was never harmed or in danger, was not forced to perform, was always accompanied by his handlers... and for the great majority of the time was laying down in a relaxed state facing away from the audience.
Cell phone video posted to social media shows the tiger pacing in the cage as entertainers use fire to entertain the students.
Other animals were also on display at the event, including exotic birds, a lemur, two macaws and a fox.
