PERRYSBURG, Ohio (WKRC) — A Northern Ohio brewery has been flooded with negative comments after a social media post by Josh Mandel.
Mandel is running for Rob Portman's Senate seat. He's visited a number of small businesses and posted pictures from them.
On Friday, Mandel posted a picture of Inside the Five and a waitress named Brianne. He praised Brianne for coming in sick that day because the brewery was short-staffed.
The posts on both Twitter and Facebook were flooded with comments from people criticizing her for coming in sick, especially during a pandemic, and potentially making customers sick. People also blasted the business and restaurants in general for often not offering sick pay.
Inside the Five released a statement to Toledo station WTOL saying it was "disappointing" that a worker came in feeling under the weather and said it had sent her home.
It also posted a message on Facebook Saturday which read in part, "Contrary to social media opinions expressed yesterday, the health and wellness of our employees and patrons is our top priority. It is our policy for employees to inform management of any symptoms prior to their shift and not report to work."
Inside the Five also says it follows all state and county guidelines.
Mandel has responded, criticizing Inside the Five for "giving into the woke mob" and said the restaurant should have "your employee's back" and give her a raise. "While so many people are getting paid to sit home and do nothing, Brianne muscled through feeling under the weather and came to WORK."
Inside the Five has since deleted its Twitter account.
