NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) - Many people are criticizing the move to allow country music star Morgan Wallen to perform at the Grand Ole Opry after he was caught on camera last year hurling a racial slur. But others disagree.

Holly G. tells WZTV she created The Black Opry last April in response to this incident. The Black Opry is a community Holly built to make Black artists feel celebrated and supported.

She emphasizes she's disappointed in the Grand Ole Opry, but she’s also not surprised.

"The point that I wanted to get across is that we're paying attention. We see what you're doing and that was hurtful. There have been so many Black artists who have responded to this with the feeling of defeated-ness. It's making them want to give up," Holly explained.

WZTV reached out to the Grand Ole Opry for a statement but has not received a response.

Some people on Broadway said allowing Wallen to perform was not the right decision.

"With the recent things that I've heard have happened I don't think he should have performed or at least without saying anything or at least without initializing a formal apology," Emoni Barnes said.

Other fans say he deserved a second chance.

"I think everything gets overblown. People are much too sensitive. I just don't believe the amount of racism people portray in the media," Tim Bostwick added.

While there's been a lot of mixed reaction about Wallen, Holly says it’s unacceptable and she does not want to see a place like the Grand Ole Opry control the country music scene moving forward.

"I want to see the people who were outraged by Morgan performing at the Opry. I want all of those people to find other places to gather," Holly emphasized.

She adds other outlets where everyone feels safe and valued.

Wallen will be performing at Bridgestone Arena in March as part of "The Dangerous Tour."
