Alcohol arrests around Miami U up 90% this year (WKRC)

OXFORD, Ohio (WKRC) - Oxford police say they are making progress in the fight against problem drinking by Miami University students.

This year, arrests for alcohol-related offenses are up by 90 percent.

While “Green Beer Day” is one of the highlights of every school year at Miami University, alcohol is readily available at uptown bars and off campus apartments.

Oxford Police Lt. Lara Fening says the department has hired more officers and increased patrols. The end result is an uptick in charges for underage drinking, fake ID's, disorderly conduct and open containers.

University officials have reminded students about making good decisions when it comes to alcohol.

New policies have been instituted to look out for fellow students and their oxford neighbors.

Students say alcohol abuse is no worse there than other campuses and they realize they're not here to party, but to get a good education

In recent years, Miami University has toughened disciplinary measures regarding alcohol abuse.

Some alcohol abuse charges could result in suspension from the university after two violations.
