SYCAMORE TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKRC) - A cross-country relay that honors fallen military and first responders is making a few stops in Cincinnati on Wednesday, May 19.
Carry the Load was created in 2011 as a way to bring back the meaning of Memorial Day.
“Two of the guys who started it are Navy Seals and they were like, ‘I never would have gone overseas if firemen and police weren’t here taking care of my family,’” Dallas firefighter-paramedic Beau York said. “We’re very fortunate to be involved with something like this and it’s not just the military. It’s all of us.”
York is one of nine people participating in this year’s Midwest route.
They started in Minneapolis on May 7, and after biking and walking thousands of miles, will end up in Dallas on May 30.
“The one time you’re out there in the middle of nowhere and a Vietnam vet comes up and says, ‘Hey, I want you to carry my friend,’ there’s nothing you can replace that with or explain it until you get out here and walk with us,” York said.
Anyone is encouraged to come out and join the volunteers during their walk.
They will arrive at Bechtold Park in Sycamore Township at 3 p.m. and then arrive at the Norwood Kroger by 5:30. After that, they’ll arrive at the U.C. Kroger at 7:30, and end at the Covington Fire Department at 10 p.m.
“We would love to know every single story of every single person that’s given their life or just served in the military so we can honor the sacrifices that they made,” York said.
“Whether they went overseas or not, they spent their time and dedicated part of their life, if not all of their life, to stuff that we take for granted every day.”
For the first year ever, Carry The Load will hit all 50 U.S. states. Click HERE for a link.
