Cincinnati man convicted of bringing drugs into CVG in his luggage

    COVINGTON, Ky. (WKRC) - A federal jury convicted a Cincinnati man of bringing 80 pounds of marijuana and four pounds of crystal meth to the area on a CVG flight. The jury found Trontez Mahaffey guilty in less than an hour Wednesday.

    Mahaffey and Tyra Nelson had the drugs in their luggage during their trip from Phoenix to the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport on Sept. 8, 2017.

    The pair were drug couriers for a drug ring with connections in Evansville, Indiana and Phoenix. The pair had made five other drug trips, according to the Department of Justice. They were paid about $1,500 for each trip.

    Nelson pleaded guilty before her trial.

    Mahaffey will be sentenced on March 9. Nelson will be sentenced April 4. They each face a mandatory minimum sentence of ten years in prison for the amount of meth they were carrying.
