Deputy calls suspect in serious Green Twp. crash "a menace to society"

Police say he was in a stolen van trying to get away from police when he caused a serious crash (WKRC)

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A deputy pleaded for a judge to issue a high bond to a stolen car and crash suspect. The deputy called Mark Newton a menace to society.

Newton is currently only charged with receiving stolen property but the deputy says more charges are pending.

Green Township police say Newton was driving a stolen van when police spotted him and tried to catch up. They say Newton ran a stop sign at Homelawn Avenue and School Section Road and t-boned another vehicle. A 77-year-old man was hurt and is in critical condition.

Assistant prosecutor David Wood said Newton previously spent 18 months in prison for a police chase that reached speeds of 120 miles an hour.

The deputy also said Newton tried to walk away from the hospital Thursday night after the crash. "He's a flight risk, he's a menace to society. He's got a drug problem." Drug paraphernalia was found in the stolen van.

The judge ordered Newton held on $250,000 bond.
