Fiona to be featured in "The Nutcracker" at Music Hall
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - The Nutcracker returns to Music Hall this holiday season.
Artistic Director Victoria Morgan choreographed a whimsical version of the holiday headliner featuring new characters, including Cincinnati Zoo's famous baby hippo, Fiona.
Wardrobe Mistress Diana Adams and her team went to work to capture Fiona's personality in a costume on stage.
"That was the number one challenge," said Adams. "Then, secondly, yes, someone has to wear it and see out of it and breate and move around and dance."
Noelle Wedig researched Fiona's face, her eyes, ears and constant smile to create the character's head.
"The Fiona costume took 3 weeks to make, 100 hours of time, and the tutu is the largest ever made at 60 inches around," said Wedig.
Two male dancers wear the costume, performing in the battle scene with the soldiers in act one. She'll also make an appearance in act two.
"She just seems joyful," Wedig said. "So I wanted her to look joyful when people saw her and make kids happy when they see her and from all angles."
The Nutcracker runs from Dec. 13-24.
