Fire damages Sotto and Boca restaurants again in downtown Cincinnati

Assistant fire chief said the fire is due to a creosote buildup in the exhaust system (WKRC)

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Firefighters tried to limit the damage to a pair of downtown restaurants as they put out a fire. It's the same type of fire that damaged Sotto and Boca in December of 2016.

Firefighters were called to the restaurants at about noon on May 23. Assistant Chief Tom Lakamp said the fire started in the wood fire cooking operation in the basement of Sotto. It went through the vents and out the roof. He attributed the cause to a buildup of creosote in the exhaust system.

Lakamp said firefighters had to go through the walls to get to the ducts in both restaurants. "We have to do some damage to prevent further damage."

Sotto was open at the time. Everyone got out safely. Boca was not open for business.

Lakamp said the situation was exactly the same as the 2016 fire. That fire did $100,000 in damage. No damage estimate for this fire yet.

The health department has been meeting with the owners to determine what needs to be done before they can serve food again.

According to Sotto's Facebook page, that will be Wednesday evening.
