"Holy Smokes!" Delhi church hosts weekend-long barbecue competition
DELHI TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKRC) - If wings are your thing, then Holy Smokes Barbecue Competition is a great place to be. “Holy” because it’s at a church. “Smokes” because that’s what they will be doing at Our Lady of Victory parish all weekend long.
Jason McWhorter helped organize the event.
He said, “Tonight, we have our People’s Choice Wing Competition. So we have 24 teams of the 35 competing to see who has the best wing."
It’s been going on for three years. Thirty-five teams from all over the country compete. The best recipes come from trial and error, according to the competitors.
Dan Kennel of Charlie’s Grilling Service said, “The ones you do like, it’ll call the neighbors and they’ll be knocking on the door and watching the smoker when it lights up.“ His partner, Charlie, added, “And they’ll bring beverages.“
This was the first time Chris Finn and Jason Wessel of JC Smokes and Brews competed.
“I make the sauces and every weekend I just start throwing stuff in a pot and hopefully come up with a masterpiece,” Wessel said.
Adults were not the only ones competing with their wings. Earlier, some of the youngest grill masters tried their hand at burgers.
Some of the money stays with the parish. Some of it goes to charity. Organizers say the barbecue cook-off is the perfect way to give back to the community in the summer.
