HAMILTON, Ohio (WKRC) - An inmate escaped from the custody of Butler County deputies and jumped in the Great Miami River. Derek Cope, 32, is already back in custody.

The Butler County Sheriff's Office said Cope escaped during transport for a court appearance at about 11:40 a.m. Deputies say he jumped in the river to try to get away. Deputies were able to take him back into custody a short time later.

Cope was in jail for burglary, theft, failure to comply with a court order and contempt of court. Deputies say he may face more charges after the escape.

“Jumping in the river is never a good idea and I think he got lucky," said Sheriff Richard Jones. "Maybe he was trying to cool off from this heat but he is back in custody where he belongs.”
