Man dead, 2 children hospitalized after Spring Grove Village fire
SPRING GROVE VILLAGE, Ohio (WKRC) - A man is dead and two children are battling critical injuries after fire tears through their apartment.
A spokesperson for Shriners Hospital says that the children remain in critical condition and in the intensive care unit.
Their names have not been released, but it is now known that the man who was killed was well liked by his neighbors in Spring Grove Village.
When Cincinnati Firefighters arrived on the scene, the fire had a head start. It started in a second-floor apartment, spread down a hallway and into the third floor.
Firefighters may have saved more lives with a rapid attack.
Once firefighters worked their way to the third floor, they found fire inside an apartment.
Also inside, they found two children injured and a man, who has been identified as Piera Johnson, who was dead.
On Friday, neighbors gathered outside the fire scene as fire investigators looked for a cause.
Neighbors say Johnson had lived there for several years.
The relationship between the man and the two children is currently unknown.
The fire broke out in a second-floor apartment. The woman who lived there managed to escape before the fire got out of hand.
Cincinnati Fire investigators are trying to determine what caused the fire.
Damages are estimated at $100,000.
The Red Cross is assisting the families who were displaced.
