Man sentenced for accidental shooting death in Covington

Man sentenced to 5 years in prison for an accidental shooting that left Kelly Cocagne dead in 2017 (KCSO)

KENTON COUNTY, Ky. (WKRC) - A Kenton County judge sentenced a man for shooting and killing a woman, while he was playing around with a gun. Judge Kathleen Lape sentenced Marquil Brooks to five years in prison.

Brooks, 23, had pleaded guilty to manslaughter for the death of Kelly Cocagne. The 35-year-old was shot in the torso in a home on Holman Street in Covington on August 14, 2017.

Brooks was playing with a loaded gun after also having smoked marijuana. Cocagne's son witnessed the shooting and confirmed Brooks and Cocagne were not having an argument or dispute at the time. "Mr. Brooks admitted to pulling the trigger while joking around but said he never meant to shoot Ms. Cocagne, apparently not realizing or not remembering the gun was loaded," said Commonwealth attorney Rob Sanders.

"It is definitely a tragic case," said Sanders. "It is tragic a young mother lost her life and it is sad a young man who loved her is going to prison for killing her, but there must be accountability."
