ERLANGER, Ky. (WKRC) - A day after returning to the field, a member of a local boys high school soccer team collapsed on the field.
The teen, who was a member of the St. Henry boys’ soccer team, collapsed during training and later died.
The Kentucky High School Athletic Association allowed athletes to return to play on Monday. KHSAA’s COVID-19 Return to Participation guidelines was released on June 1 for teams to return in four segments.
Segment 1 was two weeks long and focused on school’s acquiring proper PPE and cleaning supplies to bring students back safely under the pandemic.
No practices were allowed until June 15.
In a statement, the district said:
“Our hearts are breaking, and we are beyond devastated this morning with the news that a member of the St. Henry Boys’ Soccer Team collapsed on the field during training last night and passed away,” said St. Henry principal David Otte. “We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends and we are praying for them during this very difficult time.
Out of respect for the family, additional information will not be released at this time.”
Counselors have been made available for students.
