COVINGTON, Ky. (WKRC) - Police say an intruder was shot and killed during a home invasion in Covington early Tuesday.

It happened around 1:45 a.m. on W. Seventh Street near Greer Street. Covington Police were called for reports of a home invasion where shots were fired inside the house.

Police said three men had unlawfully entered the home, armed with guns, dressed in dark clothing and wearing ski masks. They reportedly threatened the homeowners with their guns and demanded to know the location of someone who had not lived at the residence for a number of years.

Police said the homeowners' son heard the commotion and retrieved his own handgun from an upstairs bedroom. Police believe one suspect, 43-year-old Joshua Kersey, was shot by the son while heading toward the bedroom.

All three suspects fled after Kersey was shot, but Kersey collapsed outside where he was found by police. He was taken to UC Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Police said no charges will be filed against the homeowners' son, saying the shooting was justified.

The other two suspects have not been arrested. If you have any information on them, you are asked to call Crimestoppers at 513-352-3040.
