Ryan Poston's father takes stand Friday in Shayna Hubers' second murder trial
CAMPBELL COUNTY, Ky. (WKRC) - The man whose son was shot and killed by Shayna Hubers took the stand in her second murder trial Friday.
Jay Poston says his son, Ryan Poston, wanted out of his relationship with Hubers and went to great lengths to get away from her.
"Ryan was my world, my absolute world," Jay said in court Friday.
Jay's world came apart on October 12, 2012. That's when Hubers, his son's on-and-off girlfriend, shot and killed Ryan in his Highland Heights condo.
Hubers has maintained since that night she was protecting herself. That defense did not work in the first trial, but Hubers' guilty verdict was set aside because of a juror's undisclosed felony conviction.
Then, as now, the prosecution said Hubers killed Poston because he was going to break up with her. Jay said Ryan had talked about ending the relationship.
"He says, 'Dad, she just won't let me alone; she won't leave my home,'" Jay said.
Jay said his son even stayed at his house to get away from Hubers.
"He said, 'Can I sleep in my old bedroom?' I said, 'It's always there for you" and went in, went to bed and throughout the entire night, all I heard over and over and over again was the pinging of his phone with text messages, all night long," he said.
The defense has maintained that Ryan had verbally and physically abused Hubers over the course of their relationship, and the defense is quick to point out that Ryan kept several guns in his condo. But even though Ryan kept a loaded gun on his table, he prosecution stressed it was Hubers who actually used it.
More than a dozen witnesses have testified so far. The retrial resumes Monday.
