Search for a wanted man who jumped into the Ohio River in Villa Hills (WKRC)

VILLA HILLS, Ky. (WKRC) - Police searched for a suspect by land, sea and air in Villa Hills Wednesday.

The suspect jumped into the Ohio River to try and get away from police. Now there is a recovery mission to find the suspect.

It started around 8 a.m. Wednesday as officers from Ludlow were assisting Cincinnati Police is arresting a wanted man.

The suspect was spotted but got away after darting into a wooded area near the river. About two hours later he was spotted by a Ludlow K9 officer.

Authorities were chasing the man. A police dog had him cornered and bit him. Villa Hills Police Chief Bryan Allen says the suspect went into the river with a police dog.

"The dog engaged him and the subject took the dog in the river with him. The dog disengaged and swam away. About 30 yards out he went under the water, came back up once and then went back under,” said Allen.

Investigators have been combing the shoreline and a helicopter is searching by air. Crews are also using sonar to see underwater.

“We were trying to get boats out to them but by the time the boats got out he had already been under for a while,” said Allen.

The search ended at dusk and the plan is to resume in the morning. Police say the man is wanted in Cincinnati for felony rape and assault. His name has not been released.
